Essential tremor is a nervous system condition, also known as a neurological condition, that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking. It can affect almost any part of the body, but the trembling occurs most often in the hands, especially when doing simple tasks, such as drinking from a glass or tying shoelaces.
Essential tremor is usually not a dangerous condition, but it typically worsens over time and can be severe in some people. Other conditions don't cause essential tremor, although essential tremor is sometimes confused with Parkinson's disease.
Essential tremor symptoms:
Tremors are involuntary, rhythmic muscle movements that cause shaking in parts of the body most commonly in the hands, arms, head, or legs.
Tremors can result from neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or essential tremor, and may also be caused by stress, fatigue, or medication side effects.
Not always. Some tremors are harmless , but persistent or worsening tremors should be evaluated by a neurologist.
Diagnosis involves a detailed neurological exam, medical history, and sometimes imaging tests (like MRI) or blood work to identify the underlying cause.
Yes. Treatment depends on the cause and may include medications, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, or in some cases, deep brain stimulation.
